    In Punjab, polling for Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections is underway. Over 9,000 candidates, including Independents, are in the fray. These are one of the most keenly fought rural body polls in which the ruling AAP, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP are giving it their all to secure a win.     The State Election Commissioner, Raj Kamal Chaudhuri, informed that the polling will be held through ballot papers from 8 in the morning to 4 in the evening. IAS and senior PCS officers have been appointed as Election Observers in all the districts, and 6 senior IPS officers as Police Observers to monitor the law and order situation during elections.     Counting of votes will be held on December 17.

Fans and spectators became angry and entered the ground of the Yuva Bharati Krirangan yesterday and destroyed assets after they did not get a glimpse of Football icon Lionel Messi.

  • President Droupadi Murmu felicitates NECA 2025 winners on National Energy Conservation Day

    On the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu felicitated the winners of the National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2025 and National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025 in New Delhi.    Addressing the gathering, the President said that energy conservation is no longer just an option but a necessity of the present time. President Murmu emphasised that every unit of energy saved reflects a sense of responsibility towards nature and demonstrates care and sensitivity for future generations.   President Murmu said that India has taken significant steps in the areas of energy conservation and clean energy transition. The President noted that the country has fulfilled its clean energy commitments ahead of the stipulated time frame, marking an important achievement in the direction of enhanced energy efficiency and decarbonisation.    Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal congratulated the winners of NECA 2025, describing the event as a reflection of how development and environmental conservation can go hand in hand. He also congratulated the winners of the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025. The Minister noted that more than 83 lakh students from over 1 lakh 10 thousand schools across the country took part in the competition.   For the Best Performing state award in energy efficiency, Karnataka was awarded the first prize in Group 1. Andhra Pradesh bagged the first prize in group 2, whereas Kerala was chosen the winner in group 3. For group 4, Assam secured the first position, and Chandigarh won the first position in group 5.   In the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation 2025, Anuj Prince from Ambala bagged the first prize in the Group A category, while Soumya Jeet Malik from Odisha emerged as the winner in the Group B category.

  • Constitution empowers Election Commission to prepare electoral rolls & SIR is its responsibility: HM Amit Shah

    Union Home Minister Amit Shah today supported the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, stressing that the Constitution guarantees the Election Commission to prepare the electoral rolls. He said the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is the responsibility of the Election Commission, and it is intended to purify the electoral rolls.   Refuting the allegations of opposition on SIR during the discussion on the Election Reforms in the Lok Sabha today, Mr Shah alleged that the opposition, especially the Congress, has spread lies on the SIR issue and is tarnishing the image of the country, government and Election Commission. Mr Shah reiterated that the Election Commission does not work under the government.   During his reply to the discussion, the Home Minister came down heavily on the opposition, accusing them of adopting double standards on the SIR.   He said, when the opposition wins an election, they do not raise questions, but when they concede defeat, they start questioning the integrity of the Election Commission as well as the election process. He said the NDA’s policy is to detect, delete and deport intruders, while the opposition’s policy is to normalise these intruders by adding them to the voter list.

Announcing this, Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said this is an emotional moment for every Indian. He said that Deepavali is not just celebrated but it is felt, lived and absorbed across the generations. Mr Shekhawat highlighted that this recognition is not merely an honour but a responsibility to ensure that Deepawali remains as a living heritage. Highlighting the living and people-centric nature of the festival, the Minister emphasised that Deepavali thrives through the contributions of millions, including potters crafting traditional diyas, artisans preparing festive decor, farmers, sweet makers, priests, and households that uphold age-old customs. He noted that this recognition is a tribute to the collective cultural labour that sustains the tradition. Mr Shekhawat also acknowledged the role of the Indian Diaspor,a whose celebrations across Southeast Asia, Africa, the Gulf, Europe, and the Caribbean have carried the message of Deepavali across continents and strengthened cultural bridges.

  • Belgium’s top court rejects Indian fugitive Mehul Choksi’s appeal against arrest

    Belgium’s top court has rejected Indian fugitive Mehul Choksi’s appeal against his arrest in Antwerp based on an extradition request by New Delhi. The Belgian Court of Cassation heard Choksi’s plea at Brussels yesterday and ruled in India’s favour. Officials said, the Belgian top court has upheld the decision of an Antwerp court of appeals, which rejected the fugitive’s contention on October 17 that he runs the risk of being tortured if sent to India. Officials familiar with the development said it was a positive step for the Indian government and that a formal process in Belgian courts for Choksi’s extradition may now begin. Choksi has been held in a prison in Antwerp since April this year following his arrest at India’s request. He is accused of six bank frauds between 2018 and 2022 involving amounts totalling nearly 13,000 crore rupees.

The two leaders strongly condemned terrorism and reiterated their zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
