- Sex ratio at birth rises from 918 to 930, girls’ enrollment improves under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme: Govt
The government has said that due to the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme, the sex ratio at birth has increased from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24 at the national level. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi said the scheme was launched in 2015 to address the declining Child Sex Ratio and related issues of the empowerment of girls and women. She said the scheme focuses on creating mindset and behavioural changes towards the girls by informing, influencing, motivating, engaging, and empowering all stakeholders. The Minister said the gross enrollment ratio of girls in the schools at the secondary level has increased from around 75 per cent in 2014-15 to 78 per cent in 2023-24.
- Supreme Court sets 3-month deadline for President to decide on Bills referred by Governor
The Supreme Court has ruled that the President must decide on State Bills, reserved by Governors for Presidential assent, within three months. The Apex Court set aside Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi’s decision to withhold assent to 10 pending Bills and, in the process, ruled that the President should also not take more than three months in arriving at a decision on Bills referred by Governors. The Supreme Court has said it is not undermining the office of the Governor in fixing a timeline for their actions under Article 200, but they must act with due deference to the settled conventions of parliamentary democracy. Article 200 empowers the Governor to give assent to the Bills presented to him, withhold the assent, or reserve it for the consideration of the President.

The Central Government notified the appointment of Justice Arun Palli as Chief Justice of High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Akashvani Jammu Correspondent reports that the Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal took to ‘X’ regarding the appointment Justice Arun Palli. In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the Hon’ble President of India, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, appointed Justice Arun Palli, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. Last week the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended appointment of Justice Palli, a judge of High Court of Punjab & Haryana, as Chief Justice of High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Justice Palli was designated as a Senior Advocate on April 26, 2007. He served as Amicus Curiae in various contentious matters before the High Court, addressing diverse subjects and legal propositions before both Division and Full Benches. Justice Palli was elevated to the Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 28, 2013. Additionally, he has been serving as the Executive Chairman of the Haryana State Legal Services Authority since May 31, 2023, and was nominated as a Member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on October 31, 2023, for a tenure of two years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today met the Senior General of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand’s Bangkok.
