  • Chennai on Alert as Cyclone ‘Montha’ Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal

    Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal has moved north westwards with a speed of 15 kilometres per hour during the past 6 hours and lies centred at about 190 kilometres south south east of Machilipatnam and 270 km south southeast of Kakinada.    As Cyclonic storm Montha turned severe, a local warning signal number four has been hoisted at Chennai. Ennore and Kattupalli Ports today. In Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, a distant warning signal number 2 with section signal number two has been hoisted. Distant warning signal number two has been hoisted at Pamban, Thoothukudi, Karaikal and Puducherry ports.   Fishing activity has been completely stopped in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts. The Met department has warned of strong surface winds in North Coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining districts.    Chennai and the surrounding areas have been receiving Light to moderate showers today. As a result, office goers suffered heavy traffic this morning. The crystal blue waters of Marina have turned dark, signifying the presence of a cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal.    The forecast for the city assures intermittent spells of moderate to heavy rains. Rains measuring up to 19 cm have been recorded in the catchment areas of the water bodies around Chennai. Water level storage has reached the maximum levels, and flood gates have been opened to release the surplus water.

    The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today carried out a long-range medical evacuation of a critically injured Iranian fisherman from the Arabian Sea. The Coast Guard informed that the injured fisherman is currently receiving medical treatment onboard their Ship Sachet, which is proceeding towards Goa for further medical management. It said that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, alerted vessels in the vicinity to coordinate assistance after receiving information regarding a medical emergency onboard the Iranian fishing dhow Al-Owais.

  • Cabinet Approves Terms of Reference for 8th Central Pay Commission

    The Union Cabinet has approved the Terms of Reference of 8th Central Pay Commission. Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting in New Delhi today, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the Commission will make its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its constitution. He informed that the Commission will comprise one Chairperson, one Part-time Member, and one Member-Secretary.    The Cabinet also approved the Nutrient-Based Subsidy rates for Rabi Season 2025- 26 on Phosphatic and Potassic fertilisers. Mr Vaishnaw said that the Cabinet has approved a subsidy of about 37 thousand 952 crore rupees for Rabi 2025 and the rates will be applicable from 1st of October. He added that this initiative will ensure the availability of fertilizers to farmers at subsidized, affordable, and reasonable prices. He further said that the subsidy on phosphatic and potassic fertilizers has been rationalized in view of recent trends in international prices of fertilizers and their inputs.

    President Droupadi Murmu will arrive in Thiruvananthapuram today on a four-day visit to Kerala. The President will visit Sabari Mala tomorrow for Darshan. Security and logistical arrangements are in full swing for the President’s historic visit to Sabarimala.    The President will arrive in the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, this evening and proceed to Sabarimala tomorrow morning. The visit coincides with the Thulam monthly pooja.    On Thursday, the President is scheduled to unveil a statue of former President K. R. Narayanan at the Raj Bhavan. Later, the President will attend separate programmes at St Thomas College, Pala, and St Teresa’s College, Ernakulam.

  • PM Modi Says Our Goal Is To Make India One Of The World’s Top Defence Exporters

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that our goal is to make India one of the world’s top defence exporters. Mr Modi said India is building the capacity to export weapons and equipment for all three armed forces.   The Prime Minister was addressing the Indian Navy personnel onboard INS Vikrant off Goa and Karwar coast while celebrating Diwali with them. He said missiles like BrahMos and Akash have proven their capabilities during Operation Sindoor and several countries around the world are now interested in purchasing these missiles.   Mr Modi said India’s defence exports have increased more than 30-fold over a decade. He credited this success significantly to the contributions of defence start-ups and indigenous defence units.   Prime Minister reminded that on the very day the nation received the indigenously built INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy renounced a major symbol of colonial legacy. He highlighted that inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Navy adopted a new flag.  Mr Modi said INS Vikrant today stands as a powerful symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Made in India.
