Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan has announced that the ministry is inviting applications for new private FM radio stations in 11 cities in Tamil Nadu. These cities currently do not have private FM stations. During an interaction on an ongoing FM radio auction with various chambers of commerce in Chennai, the Union Minister highlighted the achievements of the government in its first 100 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term. He noted that 15 lakh crore rupees have been allocated for various development projects, and 1,500 old laws that hindered business growth have been removed. The Minister also mentioned that 3 lakh crore rupees have been allocated for infrastructure development. He emphasised that several welfare schemes have been launched to promote the overall development of society, which aim to make India a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047. Regarding the FM radio expansion, Dr. Murugan said auctions for 234 new private FM stations across the country began on October 14, with 11 cities in Tamil Nadu set to benefit. He attributed the revival of radio’s popularity to Prime Minister Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” programme. Joint Secretary Sanjeev Shankar revealed that cities like Coonoor, Dindigul, Karaikudi, Karur, and Thanjavur, among others, will soon have private FM channels, with the bidding process for three channels per city already underway. The last date to apply is November 18, 2024.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New Delhi after attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. During his visit, PM Modi held bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the summit.   PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with the President of Uzbekistan Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said that the Ayushman Bharat Scheme is one of the best social security programs. During an interaction session at the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania in USA, the Minister highlighted that the scheme brought for insuring people’s health, has served more than 63 million hospital admissions have been serviced under this scheme. She added that this scheme is now available for everyone above 70 years of age, irrespective of the person’s background and economic status.   Talking about digital infrastructure, the Minister added that the digital access given to the citizens of India is a very powerful instrument. She noted that India wouldn’t have been the fastest growing economy if the people hadn’t utilised the digital infrastructure, which was available to them at free of cost. She also said that the digital experience of India with Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) is a superb lesson in cutting down pilferages, fraudulent transactions and ghost account holders.     The Finance Minister also highlighted the addition of the African Union into the G20 and said that it was only possible because of the efforts of the Indian leadership and diplomacy that put forth the voices and the aspirations of the Global South.   Mrs Sitharaman further noted that India is at a very critical juncture and set itself a destination of becoming a developed nation in 2047 through 4 ‘I’s. These are: Infrastructure, Investment, Innovation and Inclusiveness.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that India’s banking system has remained robust, with low levels of non-performing assets and high capital adequacy ratios. She added that the financial sector has been crucial in sustaining growth by providing the necessary credit to fuel investment in key industries.   The Finance Minister said this while addressing a session at Columbia University in New York, USA. The session’s theme was ‘India’s Economic Resilience and prospects amidst a challenging and uncertain global environment’.   Ms. Sithraman highlighted that investments in digital infrastructure have further strengthened the Indian economy’s ability to withstand shocks, with digital financial inclusion providing access to millions of citizens who were previously undeserved.   She added that India’s infrastructure development has surged forward, with large-scale projects such as Bharatmala and Sagarmala ensuring connectivity across the country.   The Finance Minister underlined that despite the increasingly complex global environment, India’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain sound, acting as a strong foundation upon which to build future growth.   She added, presently, India is the fifth-largest economy in the world at market exchange rates, which was 10th largest economy in 2013. The Finance Minister said that India’s contribution to global growth is projected to see an increase of 200 basis points in the next five years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the 14th All India Civil Defence and Home Guards conference at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar today. Mr. Shah who is on a visit to Gujarat will also attend the 60th foundation day of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in Anand.   The Minister will also launch three new projects of NDDB on the occasion. Later, Mr. Shah will attend the legislative drafting training workshop at Gujarat Assembly and will address the legislators.   Akashvani’s correspondent reports that the 14th India Civil Defence and Home Guards conference is being organised after a gap of 19 years. More than 60 senior officials and nearly 1200 members of civil defense and home guard from various states and union territories will participate in the conference.   Director General of Civil Defense and Home Guard Vivek Srivastav said the conference will mainly discuss the draft Civil Defence bill and Model Home Guard Bill along with the policy of both forces. Apart from this, the conference will also discuss the scope of modern technology to bring more efficiency in the functioning of both forces. At present, there are more than 4.5 lakh Home Guard 6 lakh Civil defence guards in the country.

The Regional Connectivity Scheme – Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (RCS-UDAN) today completed eight years of its launch. The scheme was launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation on 21st of October, 2016. The UDAN scheme focuses on improving unserved air routes in underserved regions of the country and fulfilling the aspirations of the common citizens. Under it, the first RCS- UDAN flight was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 27th of April 2017. Since the launch of the scheme, over 600  UDAN routes have been operationalized. and more than one crore forty-four lakh passengers have travelled by flight.. This demonstrates the success of the scheme in enhancing air travel accessibility. The scheme has so far connected 34 States and Union territories across the length and breadth of the country. Under the scheme, ten airports have also been operationalized in the Northeast region in addition to two heliports.  RCS-UDAN is not only providing last-mile connectivity to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities but also stands as a prominent contributor to the tourism sector. The scheme has become a game changer for many airports by triggering air connectivity and regional growth.
